(El) Sumo - Was ewig schien…

Was lange währt, wird endlich gut: Nachdem das Debütalbum der Berliner Band EL SUMO bereits im letzten Jahr fertig war, erblickt “Was ewig schien…” in diesem Sommer endlich das Licht der deutschsprachigen Indiepop-Welt. Im Nachhinein ein sehr passend gewählter Titel!

Querelen mit dem damaligen Label schon vor der Veröffentlichung ließen den Plan des ambitionierten Quartetts, im Musikbusiness Fuß zu fassen, erst einmal zerplatzen. Nun hat sich aber [PIAS] der Band angenommen, so dass das Debüt nun endlich bundesweit erhältlich ist. Die Tracklist des letztjährigen “Prototyps”, den die Band für kurze Zeit auf ihrer Homepage selbst vertrieb, wurde ein wenig durcheinander gewürfelt, neu abgemischt wurde allerdings nichts. Wer also zu den Glücklichen zählt, die “Was ewig schien…” schon im letzten Jahr gekauft und liebgewonnen haben, können auf die Neuauflage getrost verzichten.

Kommen wir jetzt aber mal zur Musik, die man eigentlich eher aus Hamburg erwarten würde. Man nehme KETTCAR, man nehme die HANSEN BAND, man stelle sich ein Gemisch dieser beiden Bands vor. Der Beipackzettel zur CD will uns zwar etwas über Emo erzählen und nennt JIMMY EAT WORLD als Referenzband, doch der unaufgeregte, bisweilen monotone Gesang von Frontmann GUILLERMO MORALES erinnert einfach zu sehr an MARCUS WIEBUSCH. Allerdings gehen EL SUMO einen Tick rockiger zu Werke als die Hamburger, haben ihre Stärken aber besonders bei den ruhigeren, epischeren Stücken ‘Kalender’ und besonders ‘Schwelm (Die hellste Nacht)’.

Ein starkes Album, das eindeutig für mehr bestimmt ist als nur ein Lückenbüßer bis zum nächsten KETTCAR-Album zu sein.
